Dublin Airport Information

General Airport Info Dublin Airport is located in Dublin, which is the capital of Ireland. It is a city that captures Ireland’s essence and has played a very important role in the identity of Ireland. Dublin Airport is the busiest airport in Ireland and in 2012 it was 23rd busiest airport in Europe for passenger movements. It handled over 19 million passengers in 2012, which is an average of over 52,000 passengers per day. History Work on Dublin airport started in the late 1930s and the first flight from there was on 19 January 1940. Construction on the new terminal building, designed by Desmond Fitzgerald, began in 1940. Its curved design with multiple tiered floors was inspired by a great ocean liner and won an architectural award. Originally designed to handle 100,000 passengers a year, the airport underwent multiple extension projects throughout the 1960s and 70s. Terminal 2 was officially opened in 2010 and now serves most of the long haul carriers. With the addition of this second terminal, the airport can now handle up to 35 million passengers per year. Infrastructure Dublin Airport is uniquely placed and is very well connected nationally as well as internationally. The airport has two terminals that have single business units, lock-up facilities, storage, airline support offices, airline ticket desks, and self-service kiosk facilities. All facilities including luxury airport lounges, bars, restaurants, cafes, and retail shops are provided by the Dublin Airport Authority, which is responsible for the airport’s management and operation. Dublin Airport launched 15 new services in 2012 and served 169 routes. The airport has consistently been handling commercial cargo with millions of tonnes of goods transported each year.
